Karsen Halai Karsen grew up in Belmont and attended Notre Dame High School where she played on the Varsity volleyball team all four years as an Outside Hitter and enjoyed the extremely competitive play. For the past 5 years, Karsen has coached at the Varsity and Frosh Soph levels at San Mateo High School. While Karsen isn’t playing, coaching or dreaming about volleyball, she enjoys spending time with her husband and newborn son. She also enjoys traveling, shopping, joking around and hanging with her close family and friends. She would love to go to New Zealand and Tonga someday! Alisa Ruiz-Johnson Alisa Ruiz-Johnson is very excited to coach the 11U team as Assistant Coach with Teresa Garrett. Bryan Gillmore Bryan Gilmore, is 25 years old, and has been playing volleyball for about 11 years. He played in high school and then in various clubs and adult leagues. Bryan loves coaching this game so he can pass on my knowledge and passion to others. He’s been coaching for a couple years now, he first started off assistant coaching the JV boys team at Saint Ignatius, then a couple years later he became the Head Coach for the freshman girls team at Mercy Burlingame. Last year Bryan joined Mr. Spray to assist him at PJV where they coached the 16 area team. His coaching style is for the girls to have as much fun as possible because in the end this is a game. This doesn’t mean that he’s not competitive though. Bryan will push the players to play to their full potential and then try to go even further. Bryan wants his players to know that they don’t have to play in fear of messing up. He wants them to know that if they make a mistake it’s ok, they just need to make sure they learn from them and move on. Bryan feels that if a player is afraid to make a mistake, they will. Respect is also very important to Coach Spray and Bryan. Respect is a two way street and should be given to all players and coaches equally. Back in the real world Bryan is an EMT for American Medical Response (AMR). He works 24 hr shifts and put in about 2-3 days a week. He is also back in school trying to get into nursing school. He has a busy life but can always find time to come in and coach because it makes him happy. Bryan is very excited for the season to start and can’t wait to meet you all in try-outs! In the past, she was the assistant coach for the 16 Power Team at Peninsula Juniors Volleyball Club. This will be her first year with BSC and she is excited to join the organization! For Chelsea, playing club volleyball was a fantastic experience. She can’t wait to share her volleyball knowledge and skills with up and coming volleyball lovers like herself! Chris Tigno Chris Tigno just completed his third year as Head Varsity coach of the San Mateo High School, which this year advanced to the quarterfinal round of CCS Division III playoffs. During his tenure at San Mateo, the Bearcats have tabbed a 52-38 record, achieved a league championship (with a 16-0 league record), and have made two appearances in the CCS playoffs. Prior to taking the San Mateo Varsity position, Chris was at Notre Dame Belmont, as assistant Frosh Coach (2005) and head Frosh Coach (2006). For the last four club seasons, Chris has coached 14U and 15U club teams with Peninsula Juniors. Chris was a long-time adult club volleyball player as a lefty setter, middle blocker and opposite, and participated in USAV Club Nationals in the Senior Division in 2001. His coaching philosophy for high school age players is to focus on improving a player’s ability to think and make decisions on the court for herself, and to give attention to refining basic skills to improve a player’s consistency and execution. Chris holds a USA Volleyball Coaching Accreditation Level I certification. By day, Chris is a corporate lawyer who works in Burlingame. Chris grew up in the Bay Area, and holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University and a law degree from Cal (but still roots for Stanford in the Big Game!). She is currently a senior at Woodside High School, and has played volleyball all four years. She played two years on the Junior Varsity Team, and was called up to play as a Libero for the Varsity Team during the CCS championship. Her junior and senior years have been spent playing as the first string Libero. The Woodside High School Team has been to the CCS championship two times as well as the team winner of the PAL division for our high school twice as well. When not representing my respective school teams, she has enjoyed playing for several club teams. Gianni first started playing club in 7th grade. She played for; Monsoon, Peninsula Juniors, and for City Beach. As a City Beach player, she was able to have numerous private lessons from coaches who have played for places such as Stanford and Santa Clara University. Her focus has always been as a Defensive Specialist and Libero; however it was and is important to her to be an “all around” solid player. She is looking forward to passing on her knowledge BSC club players!! James Spray James Spray has been coaching for the past eleven years at the Junior High School and High School levels. He has played since the fifth grade for the St. Augustine Surfers, then he set for the St. Louis High School Crusaders, and lastly with the College of Notre Dame Argonauts traveling club team. His balance of discipline and compassion starts with the first day of practice and emulates through out the season. James feels truly blessed in his marriage of twenty-one years, his two beautiful children, and for the opportunities to teach and coach. This is his eleventh year of teaching the fifth grade at St. Gregory School in San Mateo and each day feels like the first. Aloha!!! Currently she is also a waitress at Baywatch Restaurant in Burlingame, right around the Corner from Burlingame Sports Center. She has been playing volleyball since fourth grade in club and in school and has had the best coaches throughout her experience. It is for this reason that when she had her fourth shoulder surgery she knew that playing was not in her future as much as coaching. She has assisted many coaches in the past with practices and clinics and last club season took on her own 14s area team at PJV. This year she will be assisting Coach Spray and Coach Bryan. This will be a fabulous trio of fun, knowledge, and hard work! Her goal as a coach is to give the young women reason to believe nothing is too far out of reach. If they have a yearning to improve on the court or off, as a coach she will help in any way possible. Volleyball at this level is very competitive and at times the conditioning will be intense but if the players maintain a fun mindset and good attitude it will follow the players for the rest of their lives. Meghan is very excited for this season to start and can’t wait for the first day of practice. Ricky Villareal Ricky is a long time resident of the bay area and sports enthusiast.
